Roberta A. (Pettit) Harned, 83, of Northport, passed away September 1, 2011 at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
She was born in Huntington Hospital on July 22, 1928, the daughter of the late Robert A. and Margaret (Edna) S. (Waters) Pettit. Roberta was a 1946 graduate of Northport High School. Roberta resided most of her life in Northport. Due to health issues Roberta spent the past two years in New Hampshire near her son and his family.
Roberta was predeceased by her husband Alfred C. Harned in 1996; her sister Edna Kohler and brother Robert Pettit.
She is survived by her son, Timothy J. Harned and his wife, Kathy J. Grant, and two grandsons, Ryan and Gregory Harned, all of North Hampton, NH. She is also survived by Harold and Esther Harned of Northport, Ann Pettit of Ridge, NY, Richard Kohler of Marble NC and nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at the Nolan & Taylor-Howe Funeral Home, in Northport on Friday, September 9, 2011. A funeral service will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Northport on Saturday, September 10, 2011, followed by interment at Northport Rural Cemetery.
After graduation, Roberta began a career as a legal secretary that, except for being interrupted to raise a family, lasted until her retirement. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Northport, was active in many of its organizations and in particular was a member of the chorus for many years. Music was an important part of Roberta's life and something that gave her great enjoyment. In addition to the church chorus, she was a member of several other singing groups at various times.
Roberta also enjoyed traveling. She and Alfred took many trips throughout much of the east coast and spent quite a bit of time in the New England area. They both enjoyed the more rural atmosphere, spending time walking many of the natural forest trails and getting a closer view of what nature had to offer. Roberta later wandered further afield on a number of occasions for family reunions and fire department trips, ending up as far away as Alaska.
Roberta was dedicated to her family and was a dear friend to all who knew her. She will be sorely missed.
In lieu of Flowers, donations can be made to the St. Paul's United Methodist Church of Northport, 288 Main Street, Northport, NY 11768.
