Mr. Hosie was my Chemistry teacher in High School. I did not learn Chemistry very well, but I liked him. He lived a long life. I knew the family from attending Triinity Church and teaching Sunday School there.
My condolences to all the family.

Sylvia and Cynthia and family,
So sorry for your loss--he was one of the best memories of my first year of teaching at Northport High School. Ever upbeat and always helpful , "Mr.Hosie" was a steady source of encouragement to a fellow mid-westerner and to all the new teachers. I will always be grateful. I'm sure he left you with wonderful memories to cherish.

Cyndy and family -- so sorry for your loss. Obviously one of NHS' star teachers. Mr. Hosie was a great teacher, altho' I can't say physics was my favorite subject -- but he made it more than tolerable. Sympathies to all in your grief, which is felt even more strongly this time of year

Dear Aunt Sylvia, Cynthia, John, Jane and Nancy
Uncle Bill was a really special person. I have so many memories of get-togethers in Northport when we were growing up. Later, the family picnics/parties in Madison and Asharoken (and in Ridgewood farther back) were a wonderful opportunity for us to reconnect with each other as multigenerational friends. Uncle Bill was always there and always smiling - such a sweetheart. I'd like to think he's somewhere with Dan, catching up on things. I'm really gonna miss that man.
Much love to you all
Kathy

I am at once sincerely sorry for the loss of your father and grandfather and so happy he had a long life to spend with his large family. I do hope he enjoyed his well earned retirement. I knew Mr. Hosie from my days at the old HS on Middleville Rd. That science building, and what I learned there was a life-long inspiration to me. I know you've heard stories about how funny Mr. Hosie, Mr. Kass & Mr. Therien were and it's all true! But, more than funny, they helped us learn and appreciated the physical sciences of chemistry and physics.
On Nov. 22, 1963, I arrived for my advanced chemistry class with Mr. Kass; there was a notice on the blackboard to report next door to Mr. Hosie's room. Being one of 2 or 3 girls in the advanced chem class I was accustomed to practical jokes directed at us and perpetrated by the guys in the class and Mr. Kass. Thinking this was a new kind of joke, I cautiously entered Mr. Hosie's room to find everyone gathered around a small B&W television; everyone was spellbound by the news from Dallas that President Kennedy had been shot. I arrived just in time to see & hear Walter Cronkite announce that the president was dead. It was stunning. Shortly thereafter an announcement came over the PA system that school was dismissing early. They called all the buses and we went home. It may seem sad to you that I associate Mr. Hosie with the assassination, but actually I felt a bond between all of us in that room that continues to this day: we witnessed history & tragedy together.
My thoughts will be with you as you say goodbye to your father & grandfather.

Mr Hosie was an exceptional teacher. He actually made you look forward to coming to class. The anticipation of his experiments was great. An excellent example for those who one day would become teachers themselves. Sympathies to the family, and may he rest in peace.

A spectacular tribute to a lovely, lovely man. I count myself fortunate to know both Mr and Mrs Hosie, and to have been privileged to help Mr. Hosie in his garden these past few years. I learned more from him in a few weeks of summer than I did from 4 semesters of horticulture at college. The love and caring of the Hosie family for each and those around them is a wonderful example for us all. Mr. Hosie will be missed. My heartfelt condolences to the whole family.

I really have no words to describe the icon he remains (yet notice I try)
I remember him as a young teacher when I was (probably) in Junior HS...my oh my how handsome he was!! And so he remained in my eyes through all the years I was to know him as a colleague. Handsome, you see, in every way...the twinkle in his eye, the smile, the patience and the crew cut!
I will be with my family in upstate New York for our Christmas reunion on the 19th. I know Bill will understand.
God Bless Hosie Family

Dear Long Island Hosie's,
Uncle Bill meant a lot to all of us. He was easy to talk with and wonderful about giving good advice. I have a lot of good memories of him: sailing, playing on the beach, getting tours of the flowers, and my favorite of all was sitting on his shoulders and rubbing his hair - well maybe my favorite was the green pancakes that we were not allowed to pat. I am blessed to have known Uncle Bill and will try to model his kindness and sense of humor. My prayers are with you all.

I'm a friend of Jerry's. I heard about his grandfather's death on Facebook. He posted this website and I was pleased to see I could leave an official condolence. I really am so sorry you lost this wonderful man. It sounds like he lived a long and amazing life.
