Obituary of Malcolm E. Beauchamp
Dr. Malcolm (Mac) Beauchamp of Fort Salonga spent his final day traveling with his wife from dog shows in New Castle, Pennsylvania to shows in Dunkirk, New York. He tragically died May 30, 2016 at the age of 71, near Erie, Pennsylvania in a motor home crash. He and his wife have spent their retirement for the past thirteen years traveling throughout the United States, often showing their beautiful Grand Champions-- a Miniature Schnauzer and a Great Pyrenees along the East Coast. The couple also spent time visiting their son Malcolm Charles, a fourth year architecture student at Florida Atlantic University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and their nearly four-year old grandson, Malcolm Roy.
Mac was always enthusiastically involved in a wide range of activities. Born on October 27, 1944 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He grew up with what became a lifelong love of nature and the land. But from the age of ten, Mac was first and foremost a musician, eventually earning a Bachelor of Music degree at Vanderbilt University in 1966 and a PhD in 1980 at Louisiana State University.
Mac was a consummate musician, performing for many years on the trumpet in solo recitals and in many bands and orchestras in the East and the South. He was the band director at W. Tresper Clarke High School in East Meadow for several years before he was named chair of the music department until retirement. He had also served as the band director at Stimson Junior High in South Huntington and at Harrison High School in Harrison, New York.
Mac's career as a teacher was marked by excellence. Louis DiGennaro, a long-time friend and retired band director at Half Hollow Hills West High School, said, "Mac showed extreme dedication to his musicianship. He was meticulous about everything he did including his own performance, even after the rest of us had packed it away. His dissertation for his doctorate on bel canto trumpet performance was tremendous."
Tom Robinson, another close friend, fellow trumpet player, and retired music teacher, agreed. "Mac and I were friends for over fifty years. He was outstanding. I attended his high school band concerts and was very impressed. His band always exceeded any I had ever heard. He got his students to perform extremely well. Often his graduates kept in touch with him for years and that speaks to his close relationships with his students."
Dr. Beauchamp is the beloved husband of his wife of fifty years, Suzanne Beauchamp (nee Porter). Loving father of Malcolm Charles Beauchamp. Adoring grandfather of Malcolm Roy Beauchamp. Devoted brother to Wallace M. Beauchamp. 11 AM-3 PM. Service 1 PM. June 25. Private Interment to follow.
