Obituary of Joseph M. Price

Joseph (Joe) Price, 87, went home to the Lord peacefully on February 23, 2017. He was born May 27, 1929, in Arklow, County Wicklow, Ireland, to John Joseph Price and Delia Kelly Price, who subsequently moved their young family to Fairview, Dublin. In Fairview, Joe attended and learned to speak fluent Gaelic at St. Joseph's Christian Brothers School, graduating in 1945. Prior to emigrating to the U.S. in 1955, he honorably served in the Irish Army National Guard and as a Clerical Officer for Irish Railways (C.I.E.) in Dublin. On June 8, 1958, he married Eileen Sheila Clifford at St. Mary's Church, Yonkers, NY. The couple lived in Yonkers until moving, just prior to New Year's Day 1967, to Montrose, NY, where they raised six children with an emphasis on academics (and sports), seeing all graduate college. Joe himself attended Pace College from 1957 to 1960, completing all requirements in Accounting, Taxation, Business Law, and Real Estate, and received his Mutual Funds and Life Insurance Licenses from First Investors Corp., NY, in 1964. Joe worked for the New York Central and Penn Central Railroad as the Director of the Property Tax Department for more than 30 years until his retirement in 1988, after which he began a second career with Westchester County in the Mortgage Department for another decade. Joe was also closely involved with Town of Cortlandt politics for more than 30 years, serving as a Democratic District Leader and a Voting Machine Technician, while also diligently attending and expressing his views at Town Council. He was most recently honored by the Cortlandt Democratic Committee in 2013 for his many years of service to the community and his "steadfast support to the ideals of this committee, the Democratic Party and the United States of America." An active member and recent "Hibernian of the Year" of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH), Joe was Past President (Verplanck Division 8/Peekskill Division 10, reformed as Division 18) and proudly represented Westchester County as an Aide to the Grand Marshall for the 1967 St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York, NY, and as an Aide to the Grand Marshall for the 2010 St. Patrick's Day Parade in Peekskill, NY, on which occasion he received a Citation from the New York State Assembly. He was particularly proud of marching in the New York St. Patrick's Day Parade for 55 consecutive years since he first arrived in America. Closest to his heart, he was a member of St. Patrick's Parish since 1967, and served as a member of the Parish Council, Lector, Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, and Choir member for many decades. In addition, he was a long-time member of the Peekskill Elks Club #744, where he organized many St. Patrick's Day Dinners, as well as the New York State Assessors Association and the National Association of Railway Tax Commissioners. When Joe joined something, he usually stayed – and served! Always. Service in the interest of others was his life – and what we will remember him for the most. Survivors include his wife, Eileen, of East Northport, NY (formerly Montrose, NY); sister Kathleen and brother-in-law John Newman of Dublin, Ireland; brother Patrick Fergus of San Francisco, CA; sister-in-law Alyce Price of Yonkers, NY; sister-in-law Eileen Gallagher of Dublin, Ireland; son Michael (Claudia) of Natick, MA; son Matthew (Mary Ann) of Ashburn, VA; daughter Maureen (Carl Wesolowski) of Milton, GA; daughter Una (Darryl Smith) of Medfield, MA; son John of Irvington, NY; and daughter Nora (Mark Nolan) of Northport, NY, as well as 18 grandchildren and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews whom he cherished with all his heart. He was predeceased by brother Jack Gallagher of Dublin, Ireland; brother Kevin Gallagher and sister-in-law Lena Gallagher, of Dublin, Ireland; and brother William Price of Yonkers, NY. May all the departed rest in peace, Amen. May his soul be on God's right hand. Ar dheas Dé go raibh a anam. Relatives and friends are invited to the viewing on Friday, March 3, 2017, from 3PM to 5PM and 7PM to 9PM EDWARD F. CARTER FUNERAL HOME, 170 Kings Ferry Road, Montrose, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at St. Patrick's Church in Verplanck, NY. Interment will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery also in Verplanck. Mourners/Celebrants are encouraged to wear "a touch of the green" in honor of Joe's Irish heritage.
