Obituary of Martin A. Monahan

Monahan – Martin A., of South Huntington, passed away at the age of 81 on March 3, 2017. Born in the Bronx on August 17, 1935. Beloved husband of 57 years of Helene T. (O'Donnell). Loving and devoted father of Mary Tierney and cherished father-in-law of Gary McKee. Treasured and Proud Papa of Martin Joseph and Andrew James. Adored brother of the late Eileen (Richard) Hanly and the late Clare (late Ted) Cumiskey. Cherished brother-in-law of Elizabeth (late George) Dowling and Noreen (late Jack) McGuire. Revered and dedicated Uncle Mart of William (Patricia), James (Barbara) and Andrew Dowling. Admired and devoted "U.M." of Martin (Jan), Michael (Ines), the late Richard (Christine), Timothy (Terry) and Eileen Hanly and Cathy (John) DeCock. Faithful Godfather of the late Richard Hanly, Susan Janazzo, Thomas O'Connor and William Dowling. Loyal and respected long-time friend of the late Robert and Eileen Valesi-Paparella (Tony) and Adrienne and Philip Morvillo. Caring and admired Uncle Marty of Gregory (Jackie) and Peter (Cynthia) Valesi, Susan (David) Janazzo, Scott (Lori) and Christopher Michael (Monika) Morvillo and Lisa (Andrew) Luskin. Grand Uncle to many nieces and nephews. Marty was a 1953 graduate of Fordham Prep High School, Bronx. Proudly served US Army 1954-1956. Graduate of Fordham University – Class of 1960. Retired in 1998 after 38 years with Hartford Insurance Company. Marty will be remembered as a confidant, mentor, friend to all. Everywhere Marty went, he brought compassion, generosity, loyalty, kindness and laughter. Marty was a true-classic gentleman. "How lucky we are to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard". Visiting on Monday and Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Nolan & Taylor-Howe Funeral Home, 5 Laurel Avenue, Northport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 8 at 10:30 in the morning at St. Patrick RC Church, 280 East Main Street, Smithtown. Interment 12 noon on Thursday, March 9 at Gate Of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne. Marty often spoke of his love of his years in high school at the Prep. Please consider a gift in memory of Martin A.
