McKay, Alexander G., “Alex” or “Sandy”, on August 18, 2017, 83 years of age, of Northport. Beloved husband of the late Ruth. Loving father of Laura Ward (Jim), David McKay (Kate), Don McKay (Lauren). Fond grandfather of Molly Medoza (Peter), Mac, Carey, Paige, Haley, Allison and Kyle. Adoring great-grandfather of Hudson. Dedicated teacher, environmentalist and public servant: J. Taylor Finley Junior High School (English teacher, Department Chairman, soccer coach, 1964-1993); Suffolk County Parks Commission (Board of Trustees and former Chairman, 1976-2017); Huntington Environmental Open Space and Park Fund (Review Advisory Committee, 2005-2017); Huntington Town Planning Board (Member and one-term Chairman, 1983-1990); Huntington Audubon Society (Board of Trustees and former President); Huntington Oil Spillage Control Board (Member); Long Island Environmental Council (Board of Directors); Save Our Farms (Executive Committee); Cow Harbor Soccer League (Co-Founder and coach); Eaton’s Neck Youth League (Co-Founder and coach); Northport Little League (coach); Eaton’s Neck Fire Department (one of the first volunteers, early 1960s); columnist (North Shore Almanac) and editorial writer – North Shore News Syndicate; co-author, text/workbook series On My Mind (Addison-Wesley, 1972); author and photographer, with publications in Newsday, The Northport Observer, Long Island Press, Main Street, Adirondack Life, Wetlands, Killdeer, and Long Island Naturalist; lecturer, speaker, and program coordinator for public libraries, garden clubs, environmental, civic and educational organizations; passionate advocate for the environment before town, county and state boards, legislative hearings, and committees; keynote speaker aboard the Clearwater during her maiden Long Island tour; outdoorsman, fly fisherman and King of the Striper Swipers. All-around good guy with a soft heart and kind soul.
