Obituary of Donald Richard Hehir, Sr.
HEHIR – Donald R. Hehir, Sr. January 8, 2021: Loving husband of 63 years to Carol (Suthers) Hehir (deceased September, 2015). Donald was father, grandfather (PopPop), and great grandfather who was adored by 40 descendants including: Brian (Janet), Janeen Wine (Jimmy), Donald (Laura), Bernadette Gartner (Rich), Victoria Hehir (Lenny) and Jerome (Diane). He was able to spend many years with his 17 grandchildren and continued to be amazed at the count of 17 Great Grandchildren, including his most recent great granddaughter born on 12/26/2020.
He was born in East Northport in 1927 and was the 4th son born in America to his immigrant parents Mary Ellen (Walsh - Co. Mayo) and Patrick Hehir (Limerick), Ireland. He spent all his life in East Northport and lived within a half-mile of his brothers Edward (Lucille), John (Midge) and Gerald (Rosemary) Hehir, who have predeceased him. He is survived by his loving sisters Mary Olivari (Anthony) and Joan Reid (Jack-predeceased). He is also survived by his loving in-laws Dale Berner, Jean Schulz, and Paula Pinkes; predeceased by Bob Suthers and Fred Dittmar. He is the loving Godfather to many nieces and a much-loved uncle to all.
Donald was a faith filled and devoted member of St Anthony of Padua in East Northport where he spent decades as a Lector, Usher, and a volunteer at Parish Outreach where he drove the Parish van for those needing assistance. He prayed the Rosary daily for his family and those in need.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Northport American Legion. He was a proud Navy Veteran and a big advocate of "made in America." He worked as a Union Carpenter and a second job as the house projectionist at the Northport Movie Theatre. As an avid golfer, he is a member of the HOLE IN ONE club and as fate would have it, he and his son Brian achieved this honor in the same week.
We were blessed to be his caregivers for the past few years and every time we left the house, he made certain to thank us for being so good to him. He taught us well and we thank God that he was with us for 93 years. We will miss him greatly and will forever take his examples of faith, family, hope, love, patience, perseverance, honesty, compassion, wisdom, courage, and will spread these virtues into the world to honor his life and legacy. Visiting Nolan Funeral Home, 5 Laurel Avenue, Northport, Tuesday January 12th, 6-9 pm. Funeral Mass Wednesday 11 am at St. Anthony of Padua Church East Northport, NY, interment to follow at St. Philip Neri Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, we respectfully request a donation in his name to St. Anthony of Padua Parish Outreach who is helping so many in need during these hard times.
