Remembering a Friend
Much time has passed since those days at Hawley School when I first got to know Carol. Perhaps it was that radiant smile, bubbly personality or wry sense of humor that drew a young boy close to her; probably all of them. She became a friend from my early days arriving in Newtown for sixth grade. We played in the band together ( she played the French Horn, me the clarinet) , sledded down golf course hill with Judy Morgan, Bob Geckle and so many others, gathered at Bruce Herring’s barn with Elaine Guckel, Shap Smith and others having all sorts of crazy fun. Carole was a joyful person to be around; kind of the life of the party or event. Then there was the double date in seventh grade to a dance at Sandy Hook Elementary School with Bruce, Toni Hennessey, Carole and I. Bruce’s mom drove us there in a 1950 something Dodge. In the middle of the dance as Elvis Presley was singing Jailhouse Rock, the lights went out and like crazy adolescents we ran around the school and outside in sheer glee.
Carole loved Newtown. Her home and family roots went a long way back into the early history of the town. Checkout the Sanford Family of Newtown. Her house was right next to the high school on Queen Street and like other classmates who lived close could practically roll out the door and into school. When for some reason the family decided to move to Westport in her sophomore year of high school, she was devastated. It was I think heart-breaking for her. She came back for dances, parties and summer hanging out and was always a Newtowner in heart and spirit.
For our high school reunions every five years, she always tried to be there. And there was always that radiant smile and wonderful sense of humor. She seemed to grow more beautiful with age.We shared so many teaching stories about our careers and the way she told stories was priceless. I can only imagine what a dynamic, dedicated and fun teacher she must have been.
Growing up in a small New England Town was a sweet experience. From days at the town park, to hanging out at Cashman’s Drugstore, Joe’s Place , skating on frozen ponds , twenty-five cents Saturday Matinees at the Edmond Town Hall, Miss Hills Dancing School, summer parties on the hospital fields and Friday Night Basketball games and dances, it was all unsophisticated fun. I think Carole loved those times and the friends she made in Newtown
Thank you, Carole, for your kindness and joyful heart. You left your spirit in so many of our hearts.
May your family know how much you were loved and cherished by so many of us.
With affection and love

Too soon. She was such a loving presence in the world. The world would be darker without her except that her light will shine on in all the lives she touched, especially her students. I fondly remember how helpful and caring she was to me as a leave replacement sub. When I brought my daughter in after school, Carole made a point of introducing herself and offering fun activities to pass the time. As the months passed, she always made the effort to connect with my daughter when she was there.
I’m sure you will hear many stories like this and I hope it brings some measure of comfort to you.

Our family”s favorite teacher at Ocean Ave. We have all talked about her this week as I’ve sadly spread the news to my children. My daughter, Karen remembers the penny jar that collected a penny when someone said “yeh” instead of “yes”. She used one in her own home with her children! Carole impacted many lives in Northport and will missed. Our condolences to her family. The Pitfick Family

Dear Amanda and family,
So sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Carole was such a giving person who will be sorely missed by First Presbyterian Church. She gave 100% all the time, just recently as I walked into church she was sitting on a bench at the rear entrance and she had a big smile on her face and wished me good morning. Kiddingly she said “I should set up a cot here, I’m always here it seems “. Carole was always there at whatever was going on lending a helping hand. I had the pleasure of working at Ocean Avenue School as secretary to Mr. Corradi and that was where I got to know Carole. Rest In Peace Carole!

Carole was an all time favorite in the McNally household. If anyone ever had cause to feel sorry for themselves they would be reminded “you have 5 minutes on the Gandy pity pot” then you must get over yourself and reach out to others. Her dedication to her students and service to others were the lasting lessons all of my kids remember and act on to this day. Thank you Carole for enriching our lives in so many ways. We will miss you.

My dear 5th grade teacher who taught me an invaluable life lesson I will never forget. I look back so fondly on those carefree days at Ocean Avenue, where her kindness, wit and humor shone brightly.
Being able to reconnect years later when our Cub Scout Pack would use space at the First Presbyterian church where Mrs. Gandy would open the door with a smile and kind word. I always felt fortunate to have had those times, where she learned about the adult me, and my children would get to see why she meant so much to me now Ocean students themselves.
Sending love and strength to Amanda and her family as they grieve this tremendous loss.
I will always cherish the lessons and love she gave me.

Carole Gandy … What an incredible woman! She impacted us all with her marvelous witty sense of humor. She was everyone’s favorite teacher. We all tried to get our children into her class because we knew they would thrive there more so than in any other class. She will be missed by many but not forgotten. The lady is a legend!
