My deepest sympathies to Floyd’s family. Floyd was my very first boss at McGraw-Hill back in the early seventies. He was so kind and set me on my road to magazine production. I just retired from my last production job in 2019. I loved his beautiful Christmas cards with those beautiful long letters. What an amazing life. With love Jane Walsh Hazel

It’s an understatement to say that my Uncle Floyd was a good man but from an early age, that was my first formed impression of my mother’s brother. After all of our global trotting had finished and we settled in New Jersey in 1977, I was able to connect with both of my mother’s siblings regularly (and all my cousins!) For Floyd and his family, an annual treat was the one-two punch of Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings: at our house in New Jersey for Thanksgiving and then the trek to Long Island for Christmas. And there were other gatherings mixed in throughout the year.
At that stage in my life, when pretty much everyone seemed to think I was a big pain, Floyd was always so kind to me – even then, I appreciated how Floyd didn’t talk to me like I was a little kid, but just talked with me like anyone else. Even when I was flailing a knock-off glow in the dark light saber throughout his Commack home one Christmas (‘77? ‘78?)
I remember distinctly one Thanksgiving when we had first moved to our Holmdel house that Floyd showed me this small handheld calculator/computer he had. Instead of just showing it to me like it was a toy or something, he slowly walked me through how one could write a simple computer program on it, introducing me to basic structured programming concepts like “if/then” statements and the like. We got our own Apple ][ home computer a few months later and I remember diving into the programming manual for Apple Basic after having had that initial session from Floyd. Years later, I would remind Floyd of that by saying, “YOU taught me how to computer program!”
Our whole family was fortunate to come down Floyd’s 85 birthday celebration a few years back to celebrate him. Even with the “lockdown lives” we’ve lived these past couple of years, Floyd was always present on Facebook, leaving positive thoughts on family photos. And I would make sure each Veterans Day to post on Floyd’s page to thank him for his service.
Beyond my small slice of experiences with my uncle, I’ve also heard all the wonderful stories from my Mom about growing up with Floyd in the almost mythic-era of New York City in the 1930s and 40s.
Sending heartfelt condolences to my three cousins Peggy, Pat and Eileen– from your Massachusetts family!

My Grandfather was very proactive with his usage of computers. Unlike many in his generation, he embraced them when they came into fold, showing his coworkers how to use them at work. Another thing he was into was also computer games. He would whip out that laptop of his and show me stratego, which I think was an adaptation of a board game, there was battleship, another classic, and of course his favorite, train simulator. Grandpa always loved his trains! Even non computer software , he gave to us as a gift to try out . My sister and I still remember the kid pix 3 theme song. It’s no wonder why I’m big into PC gaming today, and it all came from Floyd.

Dear Pat and Family,
We were very sorry to hear about Floyd's passing.
From Holy Family HS to climbing the "Beehive" in bar Harbor, Maine, and camping together on Somes Sound, we will always remember Floyd with great fondness.
We were so pleased to see how well Floyd was doing on his 85th Birthday at your Northport home, too. He was as spry and friendly as usual.
Requiescat in Pace, our good friend. Amen.
Love,
"Bio Joe" and Mary

From my Mom, Mary Joan Jain:
My Brother, Floyd
I had the good fortune to be best buddies with my brother, Floyd, especially for the first 15 years of my life. He was always, even as a child, a gentleman...and a gentle man, to me and to everyone.
Our childhood was full of games we devised and of our almost daily walks to the Public Library, which Floyd helped me join when I was five years old. A little later in our lives, when Floyd became an altar boy at St Matthias Church, I had the joy of accompanying him to the church for the 6AM mass. We both loved the trek, especially after a snowfall when we were the first and only people making footsteps in the glistening snow.
When we were older..early teens, Floyd was my most constant and reliable companion in our attending the Goldman Band's summer evening concerts at New York's Central Park . .. a most beautiful phase in our young lives and from which our deep love of classical music evolved.
Fortunately, the girl he married, Dolores, drew me into their young married life, as if I were her own sister, but eventually, our lives took us each in different directions. We kept the bonds secure until this time.
I recently read somewhere that our moment of attention is the most precious thing we have to give. That is what my brother gave to me, all my life..and I know that he was that way with others. That was his secret. That was his charm. He was a beautiful person.
So long, Floyd. I'll catch up with you, Dolores and Betty Ann down the road!

Here are a few of my favorite memories of my dad:
As a small child: "Helping" with household chores, like mowing the lawn, building the fireplace (and hiding inside!), learning to use tools
Walking through the snow after a winter storm
Listening to stories of his childhood at bedtime
Snow sledding at the Landing Ave golf course
Playing in the Spaceship he made for me
Singing a song with him in harmony that he wrote (I am a traveler brave and bold...)
Going with him to work in the city
Planning our cross-country camping trips
Watching the moon landing on a TV at a smokey campsite in Michigan
Holding his hand the night we survived a tornado in Iowa
His many visits to me at Wellesley College with my mom
Seeing him in the audience of almost every concert I've played in
Hearing his always cheery voice on our daily AM phone calls
He was everything a good father should be.

Cousin Florian and I shared a very long and special bond . He knew me for 76 1/2 short years … he called me his “soul mate” … an honor I have cherished . He inspired me to write and communicate through the written word …. He encouraged my passion for “pen pal” writing through “snail mail”. … those , who have gone on before, are happy to have you have home…. Love you dear cousin … Aileen

Dad, you were one of kind! Full of information, and always the family historian, advisor and counselor to friends and even strangers. You will always live on in my memories, and I have so many! Our list visit in 2019, we had such a nice time at your favorite Japanese Restaurant. We will celebrate you for a life well lived, and we were so glad that you were blessed with mostly good years for almost all of your life. I will always love you. Your daughter, Eileen
