Henry Gates was the Director of Music at Gardner High School in Gardner, MA in 1949 when my mom was still a student. He and my mom were very close friends for many many years. They lost touch in the early 2000’s to her best recollection and she has often wondered what had become of him. We discovered this tribute page just now and she is very sad to hear of his passing. We did not find an obituary nor information about where he might be buried, although I do know that he has a family plot here in Gardner where he and his first wife have headstones. I think she is buried here.
I got to know Mr. Gates a little through my mom. He always had a twinkle in his eye and made us laugh. I wish I’d had the chance to know him better.
If anyone reads this and has more information about Mr. Gates that I could share with my mom I would appreciate it. I can be reached at lehales2566@gmail.com. Thank you. Rest In Peace Mr. Gates.

Henry also had two very important positions before NYU. Henry Gates was my band director at Hicksville Junior High School, NY. He was also was the conductor of the band at the Usdan Center and helped me get accepted there on scholarship. He was a big factor in changing the trajectory of my life toward the field of music. Mr. Gates was a fine band director, and I owe him a lot. Rest in Peace, Mr. Gates and thank you.

I couldn't play an instrument, I can't carry a tune, The only key I can hold on to is a brass one. Yet Henry embraced me, hard, as a son-in-law with those great eyes that bore into mine, a smile that went from one side of my field of vision to the other - he was always that up front and close, which is where everyone who knew him wanted him to be. It has been an honor to have Henry as my father-in-law for the last sixteen years, and he'll always have a strong grip on my memory.

Henry was a gentle man who inspired countless youngsters over his teaching career and beyond. I am better for having known him from learning 8 steps to 5 yards and to playing with the Huntington Community band since 2000. Reuniting with Mr. Gates these past several years has been special …
I will miss his firm handshake whenever we met and his smile when the firm handshake was returned.

His tasteful love of music was a delight. We were personal friends of Henry and a deceased wife. His passing is a great loss to us and he will be missed.

One of the Titans of Music Education in New York has left us. Henry's contribution to music education, specifically in the area of percussion and the refinement of the NYSSMA process are unmatched to this day; most importantly he always put kids first. Henry was the percussion adjudicator at my first NYSSMA festival when I was in fifth grade! Years later, I remember the great fun we had drumming together in Scottish style while I was completing some courses towards my certification at Queens College, and the innumerable collegial conversations that took place over the decades that we knew each other. He will be missed.

Henry was a dear friend, NYSSMA All-State adjudicator colleague, and my mentor...Henry taught my instrumental methods class at Queens College..for all who took Henry's methods class whenever he met you, he'd extend his arm...that was your cue to perform a parradiddle correctly! A true gentleman, and credit to the profession...I'll miss you my friend!

Elaine, my heart and prayers go out to you and your family. It was over 30 years ago that I met you and Henry when I first came to NY. From the very beginning I have considered you the two of you as both friend and colleague. Henry will be missed, but well remembered. May we all live to 93 and enjoy life as much as he did.

Henry Gates, inspirational band leader and leader of music education for children, will be remembered by all of us who knew him as a great musician, great
gentleman, and great teacher.
There are no words sufficient to describe the impact he and his brilliant wife Elaine had upon the Usdan Center and on the careers of music teachers at New York University and beyond.
Although many aspire to his combination of talent and ability to communicate, few achieve it. Henry represented the best in all of us and the best in all of music.
