Dear Mrs. Orlandi,
I am very fortunate to have grown up across the street from your decades-long family project in our happy village. Your whispering and talented daughters, your son who defined “cool” for all of us who grew up on the block, your neatly painted white brick home with the manicured bushes and the neatly rolled lawn, flawlessly flat. One day I’ll be doing that on my own front lawn. I was introduced to badminton in your back yard, which I thought must be a game that you had to attend catechism before you could play. These sturdy memories formed my childhood identity as surely as the tomato plant smell and the view of the corn rows in Oscar and Helen’s vegetable patch. Or the grinding sound of the Lewis-Oliver Dairy truck delivering milk in the morning, the noon siren from the firehouse, the distant LIRR train whistle, the fireflies and punishing summer humidity, and the sight of your large black and white station wagon, red tail lights glowing, slowly pulling out of the garage onto Third St. It took how long to warm up the engine before it could be driven in winter? One question I have for you that will have to go unanswered now: How did you and your husband, members of the Greatest Generation, survive the embarrassing decades of the 60s, 70s and 80s? What prosperity has wrought, we all must endure, I suppose. You left us all better off, in that quiet exemplary way that our neighbors do, just barely perceptible like the evening crickets and tree shadows that grace our humble neighborhood. We are grateful that God has given us the gift of your life and we thank Him for taking you back after 100 productive years of solid citizenship. Thank you and may God bless you and your family. Requiescat in Pace. Your across-the-street neighbor Brian Williams.
