Mary Macfie

Obituary of Mary F. Macfie

Mary “Mickey” Macfie, 72, of Centerport, NY, passed away surrounded by family and friends, in Huntington Hospital on Monday, July 10th. She battled cancer with fierceness and grace. Mickey touched those she met with her warmth, humor, and strength, and she cared deeply for her trusted doctors and nurses, community, friends, and family. She is immeasurably missed and loved.

Mickey was born on April 2nd, 1951 in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Francis (Jack) & Patricia Fitzgerald. She was the oldest of seven, beloved brothers and sisters: John, Terry, Tim, Moira, Kerry and Megan. She attended Briarcliffe College in Westchester, and then moved to New York City. There she attended Parsons School of Design, pursued different artistic and fashion related jobs, and ultimately met and fell in love with John Macfie.  They were married on February 22, 1980 at the Players Club in New York City, and later moved to Long Island, NY, where they stayed and raised their family.

Mickey was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She devoted years of her life to serving and fostering relationships with her community, including through playing an active role in her children’s schools in the Cold Spring Harbor, NY school district; managing the North Shore Holiday House, a nonprofit organization located in Huntington, NY; and co-owning and operating The Laughing Moon, a gift store in Huntington, NY.

Mickey adored her family and many pets, and loved making holidays and birthdays extra special for them. Even so, family would agree that Mickey’s most treasured role was being “Mimi” to her five grandchildren: Charlotte, Eleanor (Ellie), Isla, Weston, and Hendrix.  Every moment that she spent with them brought her joy, and, in the later years, fueled, in part, her otherwise natural, relentless strength and courage throughout her cancer treatments.

Mickey is survived by her two, adored children, Megan Macfie (Artis Miner) and Jeremy (Rebecca) Macfie, and countless other cherished family and friends, who in true Mickey fashion, she would want each listed here by name (you are loved dearly).

A celebration of her life will be held from 12:00 to 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 16th, 2023 at Arlo Kitchen & Bar, 1036 Fort Salonga Road, Northport, NY 11768.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Esophageal Cancer Action Network. “Happiness keeps you sweet. Trials keep you strong. Sorrows keep you human. Failures keep you humble. Success keeps you glowing. God keeps you going.”
