My Dear Brother - As I have done for all my Dear Family members that have gone before me, I wrote you a letter on the evening of your passing to read at your service. I wasn't able to do that so I will write it here so you will know how very much I loved my Big Brother.
Dear Bob,
I can't believe that you have left us so soon. When your Dear Eileen told me that you took your last peaceful breath, I thought to myself, another loved one has gone too soon.
From my first memories, you were a wonderful Big Brother to me. You and Doug were close in age, but I wasn't a part of the family for another eight years. I grew up with two loving brothers from the day I was born. You never treated me like a pest, even though I am sure there were times I was one. I remember being welcomed to the parties in the basement in my footie pajamas when all the guys had slicked back hair and the 45's were playing in the background.
I missed you terribly when you left for college and began your married life. You had two beautiful children, who you adored and cherished throughout their lives. As your family grew, so did your heart and I know you loved each one of them with everything you had.
As the distance between us widened we kept in touch through cards and texts. Every text exchanged with you began "My Dear Sister" and ended with "I Love You". My fondest memories of you are your powerful, loving hugs and your laugh, that was contagious and lit up a room. You always had a smile for me, and I will treasure the last photo I have of you in Maine about to enjoy a delicious Lobster Roll with Eileen such a short time ago.
I will always remember the days we had together, whether they were holidays or just a swim in the pool. Yes, I remember the "minor discomfort" you got from riding the horse float that ended up with you having to wear a patch on your eye. It wasn't minor but you didn't want anyone to worry and that was how you were.
You are now with Mom, Dad, Doug, Ann, Ashley, Dawn and my Dear Son Shannon. I know they are happy to see you again but the ones you left behind are heartbroken. I wear a bracelet that says, "A piece of my heart lives in heaven", it does. Thank you, my Dear Brother, for everything you did for me and with me. I am truly a better person for having had you in my life.
Your Loving Sister, Sue
