The Augello family is thinking of Stephen and keeping him and his family in our prayers. I haven’t seen him lately but years ago I had the pleasure of getting to know him as the father of my dearest friend Dominique. He was always so kind and upbeat and just a joy to be around. We always had great conversation. I have nothing but fond memories of him. Wishing you all comfort at this time and may he rest in eternal peace.

I remember Mr.G told me a story about when he was a kid, he was helping his dad landscape Perry Como’s backyard on Long Island. It was a hot day and by mid afternoon Perry Como by himself came into the backyard carrying a tray with a pitcher of lemonade, a couple of glasses and some cookies. He sat there and talk to them for a while. Mr. G said he was a very nice man. That was one story that I remember him telling me. Rest in peace, Mr. G. -Steve Augello

Steve Gaherty is also mourned by a small band of admirers over in East Northport. I feel that I need to put down some generational thoughts about what we lost when Steve passed away this week. Men my age often feel the need to speak up like this when our learned predecessors pass into eternity. I did not know Steve well but his presence is strongly reflected in my own dear mother’s grief at his loss. Barry and Betty formed a long friendship with Steve and Georgi, so I Iistened when they spoke, watched what they modeled for us and felt a certain security knowing that these men were riding point on the march of local neighborhood time.
Barry and Steve were history buffs, and I am told that they often had long conversations about interesting periods in our nation’s history from the point of view of working class suburban men. A solid mix of integrity and under-stated pride, upon which you could construct the foundation for a generation. Steve had a detailed knowledge of engineering and an interest in science, about which he could hold forth for the rest of the time that you had available!
During a rare summer visit to Long Island, Betty and I went to visit Steve and Georgi in their lovely home. The ladies decided to take over the kitchen for coffee and cake, and Steve was told to give me the tour. Which he did, in spades! Exotic plants from the four corners, the model train, and the intricate ventilation system he had installed in the basement to prevent the growth of mold and keep the place cool: we explored them all in intricate detail. And then the story from his military service. Have any of you heard this one? Steve was on a mission in some remote conflict zone, and his task was to figure out how to airdrop a full pallet of fresh chicken eggs from an overflying aircraft with a parachute, and having none of them break! Is there anything this man could not do? Our world is in safer hands because guys like Steve built it this way. It’s up to us now to keep it. The torch is passed with the expectation that we do at least as well as he did. Requiescat in pace, sir and may the light perpetual shine upon you.
