I first met my Uncle Bert in 1953 when his mother died in Dayton, Ohio and he and his brother Jimmy came to visit us as they came to town for the funeral. This was the first time I had met an Uncle and I remember being very impressed even though at my age of 3 I wasn't quite sure what an Uncle was.
My mother Jean always spoke very highly of her brothers so we knew they were someone to be respected. As to Uncle Bert, I remember she always was impressed with how intelligent he was.
I had the opportunity to come and visit for the first time in the 1970's. My Aunt Irene and Uncle Bert treated me like a king. He took me out in his airplane which was an awesome treat for me, and of course he had to do some funny tricks while in the air that he got the biggest kick out of.
In the early 1980's I drove my mother to NY for a visit and again we got the red carpet treatment.
After Uncle Bert retired he had more time to travel and for a few years it seemed he came to Ohio at least once a year. It was always wonderful to see him. I know that my mother Jean always enjoyed his visits.
I trust that he is in God's hands as he was a very good man, always the gentleman and he will be missed.
My deepest sympathy to all of my cousins and especially to my Aunt Irene.
Love,
Vinnie
