A year since Dick's sad passing fondest memories of his parrot come to mind in sync now with NYTimes article on the talking birds. In lockstep with phone company "message units" his parrot would break up friends chatting. Ignored once too often it took chunk out of Dick's ear circa discussing viper-vision or how to harvest energy of hurricanes. He underscored the I can in every true AmerIcan. His talking pet might have evolved from the talking snake in Genesis conning us & Eve to bite fruit of "tree of knowledge," including viper-vision. Of course bible stories are just that. Stories.
Rest in Peace dear friend, who still signs off, "Be good to your bride."

Dear Aunt Joan,
I am so sorry for Richard’s passing. What a wonderful, vibrant man he was! Every time I see “Iona College” I think of going round and round with him about “what college did you go to?” And him saying “Iona” college...and me saying “OK, but what college did you GO to?” (Not realizing he didn’t “Own-a” college) It was our “who’s on first” routine, and I still chuckle about it today.
My love and prayers are with you and your wonderful family during this difficult time. I know your strong and loving children and grandchildren will be of great support to you.

For 5 decades Dick has been my best engineering friend and great American. His free samples of Sylvania SUHL chips launched my electro-optics career a few weeks after getting married and I can trust him in heaven to continue to support Joan and family and urge me still to get the vision transducer job done to unblind warblind.

Dear Borstelmann family. When I think of Mr Borstelmann I feel a particular kinship as we shared our Navy stories together. I think of him as kind, interested in others and interesting himself. A man who has sacrificed for and served his country. A man who loves his family and his church. I told Rose a while back that her Dad reminded me of that famous JFK quote. “I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: 'I served in the United States Navy.” He clearly fulfilled that quote but more as well as he dearly loved his family and is leaving a legacy behind as you press on. Dear Rose and family,
My heart is breaking for all of you at the passing of your father. I pray God’s comfort and love over you all at this sad time. Mr. Borstelmann was a lovely and kind man to all he came across and I know he will be deeply missed. One thing I’m certain of is that he is now in the sweet arms of Jesus sitting with all the other saints rejoicing!
